Education: Investing in Our Future

A highly educated public is the bedrock of a strong democracy. Yet today, too many Utahns are forced to choose between pursuing their dreams and incurring decades of crippling debt. A quality education is more than a line item; it is our pipeline for the next generation of leaders, a proven escape route from poverty, and, as artificial intelligence reshapes the job market, an essential safety net for workers needing to re-skill.

As the parent of a recent college student, I have watched Utah’s public universities face repeated, short-sighted budget cuts. We should be investing more in our people, not less. State-run universities and trade schools must be prioritized so students can secure degrees or professional certifications without taking on massive debt.

I believe tuition for a bachelor's degree or technical certificate at a public, state institution should be covered just like K–12 schooling. The return on this investment is clear: we build a high-quality workforce, expand and strengthen the middle class, and fuel our economy. Higher education should be a stepping stone, not a financial trap, and it belongs within reach of anyone willing to work for it.
