We faced the fight of our lives just to keep the company alive. To survive, we had to furlough and lay off people we cared about deeply. It was a brutal, heartbreaking stretch that taught me exactly what real independent business owners face when the economy turns upside down.</h4><h3>The Creative Pivot</h3><h4>Right after a painful round of layoffs in late 2008, Lori suggested, jokingly, we turn our winemaking hobby into a business because people buy wine even during a recession. Two weeks later, I sat down with her to go over my business plan for a part-time winery we could run alongside our engineering firm just to keep the bills paid.</h4><h4>We launched the winery in 2010. For years, I pulled double duty as a full-time engineer and a winemaker. But by 2016, skyrocketing corporate insurance costs made running the engineering firm impossible. We pivoted fully. Today, we are full-time winemakers and distillers. Lori and I still craft, bottle, and pack everything ourselves, with our own two hands.</h4>

I fully support Move to Amend, a coalition dedicated to ending corporate control over our democracy. Right now, a web of legal loopholes allows billionaires and massive corporations to bypass standard campaign contribution limits through indirect spending, effectively buying elections and drowning out the voices of ordinary citizens.Let's be honest: when special interest groups funnel millions of dollars into a campaign, they expect something in return. While direct individual donations are strictly capped by the FEC, the current system allows a wealthy few to dictate policy behind closed doors.This reality highlights a fundamental flaw in Washington: our government is being run by the power of money, not the power of the people. Invest in American Infrastructure, Not Tools of DestructionFoundational infrastructure, our roads, bridges, power grids, and water systems, is the backbone of a functioning society and a thriving economy. Right now, America’s infrastructure requires massive, sustained modernization to meet the demands of our people and fuel national growth. We must shift our priorities, investing heavily in projects that build America up rather than funding ventures that tear other nations down.The American Society of Civil Engineers currently grades our national infrastructure at a "C." While the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) provided a critical baseline that helped lift our national average, recent funding cuts, including a 7% reduction in 2025 with more planned, threaten to erase that progress. For America to remain a vibrant, competitive nation, we must fully restore and expand our infrastructure funding.As a retired civil engineer, I could talk about the complexities of our infrastructure for hours. I welcome the chance to discuss it with any voter.Looking at just one critical example: here in Utah, and across the West, water is our most pressing challenge. Without water, our communities cannot survive. The historical methods we used to collect, treat, and transfer water are no longer sufficient to handle changing climate realities and growing populations. We need comprehensive investments to modernize water systems nationwide, alongside basin-scale engineering projects designed to secure a continuous water supply for generations to come. Brilliant, viable solutions exist, but they require serious capital. It is time to stop talking about these vital projects and finally fund their implementation.

Foundational infrastructure like our roads, bridges, and power grids is the backbone of a thriving nation, but America's current networks are facing critical neglect. As a retired professional civil engineer, I believe we must shift our national priorities to invest heavily in building our own communities up rather than funding destruction abroad.

Let’s define corruption plainly: if an elected official, or anyone connected to them, profits from the power of their office, that is corruption. It rigs the system against the rest of us, plain and simple. When I look at Washington, I see a political class that treats public service like a private get-rich-quick scheme, writing loopholes for their corporate donors while regular families in Utah sweat over their mortgages.I’m running because I’m tired of watching career politicians use their positions to line their own pockets while ignoring the middle-class families who don't make enough zeros to buy their attention. We need a senator who answers to citizens not special interests. It’s time to ban members of Congress from trading stocks, close the revolving door for corporate lobbyists, and firmly return the power of our government to the everyday people it is supposed to serve.

A quality education is more than a line item; it is our pipeline for the next generation of leaders, a proven escape route from poverty, and, as artificial intelligence reshapes the job market, an essential safety net for workers needing to re-skill.As the parent of a recent college student, I have watched Utah’s public universities face repeated, short-sighted budget cuts. We should be investing more in our people, not less. State-run universities and trade schools must be prioritized so students can secure degrees or professional certifications without taking on massive debt.I believe tuition for a bachelor's degree or technical certificate at a public, state institution should be covered just like K–12 schooling. The return on this investment is clear: we build a high-quality workforce, expand and strengthen the middle class, and fuel our economy. Higher education should be a stepping stone, not a financial trap, and it belongs within reach of anyone willing to work for it.

Instead, the financial burden shifts directly onto local citizens and small-business owners, who are left holding the tab for the infrastructure upgrades these massive developments require—even when the projects don't benefit the local community.While big businesses can bring value, we must keep their impact in perspective. Utah’s small, medium, and mom-and-pop businesses plant their roots deep in our towns. They don't threaten to pack up and leave for the next tax haven, yet their collective contribution to our economy is routinely ignored by a system that favors Wall Street over Main Street. Main Street businesses pay their full share of taxes, and it is time the largest corporations do the same.

The economic and social realities of rural Utah are vastly different from those of our urbanized corridors. As we craft and implement public policy, we must explicitly account for these distinct priorities to prevent one-size-fits-all mandates from unintentionally crippling our rural towns.Too often, sound-bite solutions regarding water usage, agriculture, and fossil fuels completely ignore the human cost to the areas driving production. Energy extraction—specifically oil, gas, and coal—remains the economic lifeline for a significant portion of rural Utah, providing stable, high-paying jobs that sustain entire local economies. While transitioning toward cleaner energy is necessary to lower emissions, abrupt blanket bans disregard the immediate financial devastation inflicted on these communities.We must work directly with rural leaders to build practical, phased solutions that develop new economic drivers before pulling the rug out from under existing ones. A thriving, unified Utah requires keeping our rural towns economically viable and vibrant. We must defeat the SAVE Act, championed by Senator Mike Lee. This bill is outright voter suppression masquerading as election security. Non-citizen voting is already strictly illegal, carries severe federal penalties, and is exceptionally rare. Instead of protecting the integrity of our elections, this bill creates massive administrative hurdles designed to make it harder for law-abiding Americans to vote. Under its rules, every single citizen, whether they have been registered for decades or are a first-time voter, would be forced to present a narrow list of documents to prove their citizenship, a list that excludes standard state-issued driver's licenses. Historical evidence proves that these hyper-restrictive registration laws don't stop fraud; they simply lock out eligible American voters.While the SAVE Act primarily targets registration, it is part of a broader, short-sighted assault on mail-in voting. Voting by mail has a proud history dating back to the Civil War, and today, it is the secure, gold-standard system used right here in Utah. You can’t eat health insurance, you can’t wear it, and you can’t sleep under it. So having no other choice, we dropped it. We opted to put money aside each month to cover our own care, but for millions of families, even that isn't an option.The United States is the only developed nation where corporate profits take precedence over human lives. It is morally wrong. Furthermore, your auto, homeowners, and workers' compensation premiums will naturally decrease because those policies will no longer have to absorb wrapped-in medical payouts.As an uninsured American, I live with the daily knowledge that a serious illness like cancer would force my family into a horrific calculation: seek treatment and lose our home or skip care to save my wife and daughter from financial ruin. No American should ever have to choose between bankruptcy and death. It’s time to stop treating healthcare like a luxury and start treating it like a fundamental right.

Water: Securing Our Most Critical ResourceThe Colorado River Drainage and Great Salt Lake are in crisis and need to be saved. Spanning across Seven States, Two Nations, 30 Indigenous Tribes and Nations, the Colorado River supports over 40 million people and allows for the production of around 20% of American agriculture produce. We cannot allow this water system to fail.On the surface, solutions are simple: add more water and restore the hydrological cycle of the basin to a healthy level. In practice, following a plan to accomplish this will be difficult and expensive. While conservation and smart water use remain critically important to long term success, the water system can no longer be saved by this alone.Saving the Great Salt Lake is an essential aspect of a broader, multi-front strategy. Evaporation from the lake feeds the weather patterns that bring essential rain and snow to the Wasatch Range and the critical headwaters across Northern Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado.Just saving the lake is not enough on its own. Yes, it'll rescue our ski tourist industry, but it is an important aspect of an overall plan. With a multi-path remediation plan, we can restore these two great waterways and secure the water needed to live for generation to come.As a retired Civil Engineer, this is something I have given a lot of thought to, but this campaign website is not the best place to start getting into specific details.I will work across party lines especially with the representatives of the other 6 Colorado River Compact States to secure the federal funding required for the large-scale infrastructure projects needed to address the issue. There are no quick fixes, but delaying action only guarantees disaster.
